In 2002 my wife, Ann, was employed as the Nursery Teacher at Cottage Grove School and was also given the oversight of the School Library. In 2006 I retired after 37 years as a full-time teacher and volunteered to help out in the library on an occasional basis. I soon found myself coming into the school two or three times a week, partly to help in the library and later to hear children read in Year 1/2. I also enjoyed volunteering as an additional adult and driver accompanying school trips mostly with Nursery, Reception and Years 1 – 4. Over time this evolved into taking on One to One tuition for some of the older students; helping them with their English and Maths. This too was something I greatly enjoyed.
In the autumn of 2007 I was asked if I would be willing to become a Community Governor of the school, a role which I have tried to fulfil ever since. I am currently the Chair of the Resources Committee.
I am very proud to be associated with Cottage Grove. I believe that its pupils are very fortunate to have the opportunities for learning and personal development that the school offers, thanks to the hard-working dedication of its staff.
Outside the school I am a trustee of a Community Hub near where I live and help with their Homework club once a week.
